What's PRTR?

HOME > What's PRTR?
PRTR(Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers) is the register that collects and disseminates information on environmental releases and transfers of chemical substances from industries and other facilities. Industries and other facilities quantify and report the amounts of substances released from each environmental medium (air, water and soil) or transferred off-site for waste management and wastewater treatment. According to the public right-to-know principle, publicly available PRTR provides access to environmental information and can stimulate interested or potentially affected parties to ask questions and to seek improvements for human health and environmental well-being.

Purpose

The purpose of the PRTR is to promote voluntary improvements on the management of chemical substances by business operators. Furthermore, PRTR preserves the environment by taking measures for the releases and transfers of specific chemical substances in the environment. PRTR delivers information about hazardous chemical releases and waste management activities to business operators and citizens and supports decision informed by all levels of industry, government, non-governmental organization and the public.

Significance of the PRTR

  • Obtainment of basic data for environmental conservation
  • Determination of priorities in the administrative measures for chemical substances
  • Promotion of voluntary improvement of the management of chemical substances by business operators
  • Provision of information to the public and promotion of their understanding of chemical substances
  • Understanding of the effect of environmental conservation measures and the improvements made by the measures
